The tree that we know of as the tree of life was left by the great God(s) and was said to be able to grant immortality.
Over the next five hundred years, many of the great ones that were blessed by God sought to prolong their lives further. They were all given long life but they knew that it would eventually end and they all wanted the immortality promised by the tree of life. At this time the women blessed and known only as the great mother organized a meeting with all of the blessed. They all had become great leaders of tribes and some had formed cities and trade had become regular amongst them. She told them that she had discovered a way that they could become immortal and become gods unto themselves. Many of them accepted and many of them performed the ritual in different ways.
This event established the first change in the measurement of time and set the calendar to zero.
Those that accepted numbered 43. Those that refused numbered 36. Of those 36 that refused, they were sworn to secrecy and those that refused to take the oath of silence were killed. Five of the accepted and eleven of the 36 that refused were killed in the process leaving only 38 that became as gods and 25 that lived long lives and eventually died between the ages of 1200 years of age and 1700 years of age. Three broke their oaths and told their tribes and peoples about the corruption when followers of the gods entered their cities to establish temples. These three in the year 267 banded together in hopes of standing against the gods as free peoples. All three of them fell and the entirety of their civilizations were burned to the ground leaving none alive. They lasted only two months before being completely destroyed.
The ritual required blood sacrifices from mortal souls. Most of them would require that in order to be considered gods unto themselves, that nobody could remember them as mortals. They would then sacrifice their tribes, cities, and followers and collecting samples of their blood into urn’s. This blood was then taken and a fruit from the tree of life would be placed in the blood and planted corrupting the newly grown tree. They would then eat of the fruit of the corrupted tree to grant themselves immortality without the death that had come to others that tried to test their “worthiness”.
Once the ritual was completed, the corrupt tree was then burned in order to prevent others from gaining immortality that weren’t originally blessed. To this day it is believed that the great mother and her descendants still protect the original tree. Nobody, not even the great gods know where that is anymore.
